THE WRECK OF THE BRUCE. Tho following is tho judgment given by the Collector of Customs at Greymouth after the inquiry into the circumstances under which tho steamer Bruce was wrecked : " The vessel was lost through unavoidable accident, by the roughness of the sea outside the bar driving the vessel into the break. That the accident occurred during an attempt to return to the Grey, the master finding the sea too rough, by a heavy sea having struck tho ship, driving her bow to starboard, bursting in companion-door and skylight. That there is no blame to be attached to tho master for crossing tho bar, as the signalman's evidence proves tho bar was safe at the time, but he did not have the lights ready owing to no application having been made." To this ill. &W.v«> ayjieuuS mc xununlug oufigestion: —" As, however, most of the accidents and wrecks that tako place within my district happen not on tho bar but on the beaches, 1 would recommend, owing to the peculiar force and set of the sea, that in future the opinions of the harbor authorities should be t;'ken, not only for tho safety of a vessel crossing tho bar, but as to the safety outside for the stato of tho beach to Point Elizabeth on tho north, aud Saltwater on the south. In fact, combining their opinions with the state of the beach with the state of the bar."
