The Westport Times. THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1869.
By. our latest telegram from Wellington it will be seen that, by a small but sufficient majority, the House of Representatives Las declared its abandonment of the Self-Reliance Policy. At least, the assistance of England is to be sought for, though it may only be afforded at the cost of the Colony ; and, notwithstanding the tone of severity and " snubbery " which has lately characterised the Colonial Office and the English Press, there is little reason to fear that an appeal thus made directly by the Colony to the Crown—following, as it does, the appeal which the incidents of the war must have made to the heart of the nation —will be treated with the same coldness or cold - bloodcdness with which the Home despatches have recently been written. We hope we may accept this step taken by the House as the beginning of the end.
