There was a heavy surf yesterday, although the wind was light and from the eastward. It will be seen by our telegrams that an accident Ims happened to the steamer Kennedy at Hokitika. Fortunately the latest information is that she is likely to be got off the beach, and to be able to resume the trade in a few days. It is understood that the steamer John Penn is to return to the West Coast, but we believe that she need not be expected for several months yet. On Saturday the printer put his own value upon the services of the Harbor Master, Capt. Leech, and stated that his salary was ioOOO. Unfortunately the Provincial Government are not so appreciative as the printer, and have not yet allowed their liberality to go beyond £3OO. It. is, as our Greymouth contemporary says, a scandal to the service that Captain Allardyce, the Harbor Master there, is not treated on at least equal terms. We understand that the schooner Joseph Paul and the ketch Alert have been chartered by Messrs Freeth and Greig, and will load cargoes of produce at Nelson for Charleston and Westport respectively. During the late gale at Auckland, the cutter Fly was smashed to pieces, and five others were sunk. Ihe schooner Elisabeth Mary, and the cutters Annie and Flirt have also been wrecked in the neighborhood of Auckland, and at Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, the small steamer Hero and the schooner Grayling have been lost, the latter with her crew. An export of one hundred and thirty-five tons of Grey coal was entered through the Customs at Greymouth ou Saturday week, viz., Magnet, brig, SO tons ; Yarra, steamer, 30 tons; Brothers and Sisters, 2o tons, the two last vessel being for Hokitika. Referring to the wreck of the steamer Brace, fie Greymouth Star of Friday says : —" We are extremely sorry to have to report that the old favorite p.s. Bruce is past all redemption, haying with the heavy sea of last night gone to pieces by separating fairly in the centre. Shu commenced to break up last night, and this morning separated by the stoke-hole, and she now lies a total wreck. Hopes had been entertained that she might have been saved and have yet done good service to the coast and to her owner, but since her stranding nothing but bad weather has prevailed, and all efforts to launch her were fruitless."
