The s.s. Kennedy, from Nelson, arrived yosterday morning. She left Nelson on Wednesday morning last, but, haying a heavy cargo, and inclement weather to contend with, she had to take shelter for some time at Totaraaui and under the lee of Cape Farewell. We hear that the s.s. Waipara has been detained for some time at Okarita, where she is bar bound. The steamship Wallabi, after a hard clay's steaming from Greymouth, reached this port on Wednesday night, and on Thursday evening she started for Wanganui, going safely over a rather rough bar. The reports to hand as to the condition of the steamer Bruce are not very favourable. She is said to be lying deck on to the sea, deep in tbe sand, and with the surf making a clean breach oyer her. The beach where she. lies is very perpendicular, and peculiarly exposed, so that some fears are entertained as to her being got oil'. There are, in fact, statements current that she is breaking up. The Grey B'n-er Argus of Tuesdays :—The p.s. Bruce was expected to bo launched on Sunday, but early in the day she slipped off the ■ways, and a good deal of the work has to be done oyer again. Fortunately, the weather remained calm, aud as yet the Bruce lias not received any serious injury. [Our latest telegrams record her total wreck.]

The steamer Charles Edwards is expected at Nelson, from Sydney, on the 20th inst. The Nelson Government have effected a saving (!) by still further reducing the miserable salary they pay the Harbor--Master at this port. Hitherto they hare paid one-half of Captain Allardyce's salary, at the rate of .£'!) per month, but this has been reduced to £s, thus effecting a saving to the Province of £l2 a-year. Should the Westland Government follow the example, the Harbor-Master's pay will be X-l a-week —the same remuneration as is received by the Signal-men here and at Westport We find by reference to the estimates that the Harbor-Master at Westport receives £3OOO n-year, with a boat's crew at £350 a-year, and the HarborMaster at Hokitika receives £450 a-year. Wo hope the matter will be represented in the proper quarter, for an injustice has been done to a most deserving officer, who holds a very responsible position— Grey ZliverArgus. Efforts are being made to raise the steamer Tarannki, which has lain for twelve months in Bowden's Bay, Tory Channel. The plan to be tried, as far as we can gather, is to lift the vessel in some way by the port holes, and so avoid the danger of descending to the great depth necessary to reach her keel. The parties who have engaged in the work are sangiune of success.

The following is from the Melbourne Zaader; —We are informed on good authority that when the ship Blue Jacket, lately burnt at sea when on the voyage from New Zealand to Europe, was about leaving port on her fatal passage, a sailor who had been engaged for the trip absolutely refused to go on board because the wool was packed in such a damp condition that he believed it was sure to catch fire. The man was laughed at, but stuck to the determination. Nothing has yet beep heal"d of the unfortunate members of the crew, the greater part of the complement, who left the Blue Jacket in the two longboats. It is feared that the poor fellows must be given up for lost.

At Melbourne, on June 15, Joshua Henry Dili, master of the barque Nightingale, was summoned to answer a complaint made against him by Mr 1). W. Gossett, emigration officer, for an alleged breach of the 35th section of IS and 19 Viet., chap. 119, in not issuing provisions of sweet and good quality, according to the dietary scale, during the voyage of that vessel from Natal to Melbourne. The Bench adjudged the defendant to pay £4O and costs; a moiety of the penalty, if recovered, to go to the passengers who had complained to the immigration officer. Mr Smyth gave notice of appeal. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) ARRIVALS. Pout Ciialmees.—July 7—Undaunted, from London. Lytteltox. July 7 Alhambra, from Wellington ; Tararua, from Duncdiu ; Rangatira, from Wellington.
