MR. GALLAGHER, M.H.R., ON FENIANISM.

"We have already reported a discussion in the House of Representatives on a motion for copies of all reports or other documents in the possession of the Government proving the existence of a branch of the Fenian organisation at the Thames Goldfields. Mr Gallagher's remarks on the motion, which was passed, are thus reported in Hansard : Mr Gallagher felt it to be his duty, in his place in that House, not to let the motion pass without saying a word or two. He thought he was in duty bound to do so in justice to himself and. in justice to his country, inasmuch as the despatch of the Native Minister did, to a certain extent, cast a stigma upon every Irishman in the Colony of New Zealand. He had no hesitation in saying that there was not an Irishman in the Colony who would not be ashamed to say that there existed a Fenian organisation for the purpose of overthrowing the authority of Her Majesty in New Zealand. If the Native Minister was in possession of documents to that effect he should lay them before the House. It was no doubt a cock andbull story. He thought that no individual, from private motives of his own or perhaps from spite to others, had a

right to iuform the Government that such an organization existed, unless he had full authority for making such a statement. The Native Minister had written home saying that one of the principal reasons why the 18th Regiment had been retained in New Zealand was to suppress the Fenian organization, especially in the Auckland goldfields. lie thought that very strong language indeed ; and the Native Minister must surely have strong documents to prove that there was some danger of an organised rising ; and at a time when there was a Native war, the honorable gentleman must have considered thai there was as much danger arising from the organization as from the Natives. It would be but right to let the House know what were the documents which had justified such a despatch.
