THE NEW MINISTRY.
{BY ELJEGTBIQ TELEGRAPH.) The following telegrams are additional to those which we have received : Wellington, July 1. Mr Fox, in reply to Mr Stafford, stated that the Government did not intend to take any steps to comply with the request of the Timaru and Gladstone petitioners, praying for separation from Canterbury, and for erection into a county. In Committee of Supply, Mr Vogel brought down an Imprest Bill for £150,000 to meet demands for the next six weeks, by which time be hoped an Appropriation Act would be passed and the session ended. He entered into a full explanation of the liabilities requiring to be met, and stated that the Defence expenditure of last month was £41,000. He also introduced a Bill authorising an issue of Treasury bills to the extent of £150,000. Mr Stafford complimented Mr Vogel on the fairness and clearness ot his statement, and considered the request for money reasonable. He could not offer any opposition to the immediate passage of the Bill through all its stages. Last month's Defence expenditure was entirely exceptional, and it was not a fair basis of the annual cost. Cracroft Wilson's resolutions with regard to the employment of Ghoorkas against the Maoris were introduced in a long speech. The debate was adjourned till the 9th instant. A despatch received from General Chute annouuees the immediate removal of the 18th Regiment.
July 2. Mr Fox remains Premier, without a portfolio. The Money Bills have passed the Lower House, and the Council are sitting to-night to pass them. Mr Gisborne has been asked by an Auckland deputation to stand for the Superintendeucy of that Province, and to take a seat in the House of Representatives. His answer to both requests is at present unknown.
