THE FATHER OF FENIANISM ON GLADSTONE'S POLICY.

A " Doctor of Divinity," writing to the Dublin Evening Mail, shows, by extracts from a New York paper, what John Mitchel, who describes himself as the " Father of Fenianism," thinks of Mr Gladstone's " pacificatory " policy for Ireland : —" The grand thought of English statesman," says Mitchel, " with regard to Ireland was to destroy her people, or hunt them away to the ends of the earth ; and the operation of this famous disestablishment would be, by impoverishing the islar.d, to stimulate evictions, aggravate starvation, multiply the emigrant ships, and so clear oil' a million or two more of the inhabitants." During and after the passing of the Government bill, the " Father of Fenianism " still recommends the creation of " a power massive and steady, silent but watchful, which would not only frighten England by an occasional scare, but would one day strike down her odious empire, to the especial profit, the liberation, redemption, and final triumph of Ireland. The remedy, then, for Ireland (he concludes) —and under heaven there was no other—was the destruction of the British empire." Such (writes the " Doctor of Divinity ") are the grateful and merited thanks of England from those she was lately most afraid of for the spoliation of her most loyal friends in Ireland, and the exaltation of implacable and insatiable foes to her prosperity, monarchy, and religion.
