CHARLESTON.

(from: our own correspondent.) July 2. The newly elected medical officer, Dr Braen, has arrived to take charge of the Hospital, in which at present there are no serious cases. Since Mr Broad's departure for Nelson, a large number of cases for application have accumulated, so that the time of the Court has been fully occupied during Dr Giles's visit since Wednesday last. In miuing matters, I have nothing fresh to report, this week, except that there is a rumour that a back lead has been found on Sardine Terrace. The claims now at work are erabled to continue without interruption, owing to the late rain. Several leases have been applied for, no doubt in anticipation of the Charleston Water Race being brought in, as the ground applied for

can only, in most instances, be profitably worked on its completion. The survey is now being carried on by Mr Greenwood, Mr Dobson being called to Nelson, his services being required by the Government. It is conjectured that some of the public works for which special sums of money were voted, at the last sitting of the Provincial Council, are about to be commenced. Some of those works are much required, and their speedy commencement is very desirable. The track to the Little Grey, commencing in this district, is, on the authority of a gentleman residing here, a matter of .no difficulty. The import of his account is, that if remunerated for his time and trouble, he would undertake to point out a way, by following leading spurs at present accessible for horse traffic, and thence through the dividing range into the Little Grey district. He has spent some considerable time and endured much hardship in prosecuting his researches in the locality, and has every confidence in the practicability of such a route.
