THE NEW BISHOP OF AUCKLAND.
We quote the following from the Home News : The Kev. William Garden Cowe, M. A., rector of St. Mary's, Stafford, who has been nominated to the Bishopric of New Zealand, in succession to Dr George Agustus Selwyn, Lord Bishop of Lichfield, was educated at Trinity Hall. Cambridga, where he took his B.A. degree in 1855. He was ordained in the same year by Dr. Turton, Bishop of Ely, and licensed to the curacy of Moulton, near Newmarket. On the appointment of Dr G. E. L. Cotton, head master of Marlborough College, to the Bishopric of Calcutta, in 1858, Mr Cowie became his chaplain, having previously been an assistantchaplain of the diocese. He was an ardent fellow-laborer with the Bishop in his educational works, which were for a tim 3 suspended in consequence of his untimely death. When that event occurred Mr Cowie returned to England, and in 18G7 was presented by the Lord Chancellor to the rectory of St. Mary's, Stafford, which he has held up to the present time. It is worth £4OO a year, and falls to the gift of the present Lord Chancellor. Mr Cowie will take the title of Bishop of Auckland, not that of Bishop of New Zealand, as was borne by his predecessors.
