We reported the Bruce as having sailed for Greymouth on Friday evening. The facts were that, she did sail, but that she returned to port very shortly after her departure. Although Captain Hepburn had examined the slate of the bar, and made due allowance for the signs of impending bad weather, ho found, when he got into' tho surf, that there was a heavier sea on than he expected, and he prudently returned to port. His prudence, however, did njf exercise itself until he had given the bar a very fair trial, for the decks of the vessel were swept of some cargo, including live pigs and some casks of beer. Fortunately ho had some good deck hands, and when it was seen that the sea was altogether too heavy for auy vessel to cross the bar in safety,,the Bruce was put round very quickly, and' was brought into port without damage, and, no doubt, to the satisfaction of tiio temporarily alarmed passengers. The s.s. Kennedy arrived in port on Sunday, from Kelson, and at mid-day yesterday sailed for Greymouth and Hokitika.

CATASTROPHIC AT SEA. The Waterford Company's steamer Lcda, Captain William Covency, which left Oporto on the 19th March, with a cargo of fruit and cattle, for London, put into Plymouth at 11 o'clock on Thursday night, 25th March. Near Capo Finisterre, on Saturday, 20th March, at about two p.m., she followed for some distance a four-masted screw steamer, which appeared in groat .distress. This vessel was very deep aft, and suddenly went down, stern foremost. The Leila steered up immediately, and found a number of the crew floating about and endeavoring to save themselves. Two quarter boats (one in charge of the chief officer, Mr Pratt) were at once lowered, and each succeeded in rescuing five men ; thrco were picked up by the ship. Of those saved, three were on the bottom of one lifeboat and three on the bottom of another. They were largo, serviceable boats, which turned bottom up when tho steamer went, clown. There was no time to lower them by tho ordinary mode. The other men saved were floating on spars. The body of one man was found in a lifebuoy, with his head u ider water. White the crew were in the water, a clipper schooner, name unknown, and showing no colors, sailed close to them, but passed on without rendering any assistance ; the schooner was so close that she was hailed by one man in the water, who was answered by those on board. The vessel which sank pr.ived to be tho Italian, 1300 tons, Captain Patrick Urquhart, belong ing to Messrs John Bibby and Co., of 21 Water street, Liverpool, from Trieste, March 5, with a general cargo. It appears that she struck on a sunken rock, about five miles off Cape Finisterre, and went down in ten minutes; wind, N.E., moderate. The steamer had five hatchways, and water poured in by the fourth and filth, which were abaft the engine-room. When she went down she hid on board a crew of 39 ; so that 2G have perished, besides throe passengers the steward of a yacht, who had paid his passage from Corfu, and two distressed British subjects sent home by the Consul.
