THE GREAT NORTH LEAD

The following is the memorial which was, on Saturday, presented to the Warden by a deputation of miners from Giles and Eochfort Terraces : " The memorial of the' undersigned miners, occupying claims on Giles and Eoehfort Terraces, Kespectfully sheweth, —That for the last twelve months or thereabouts they have, occupied and been engaged tunnelling, with the object of tracing the lead of gold now working on the south end of Giles Terrace, and that up to the present time their efforts have been unsuccessful. Th<it your memorialists are still of the opinion that the lead continues through the terraces northerly, but, owing to the great expense already incurred by them, they are not

in a position to engage an efficient surveyor, to give them the proper levels and dip of the lead. Tour memorialists therefore seek your aid and influence in their favor in procuring the services of the Government survey staff, and in doing so you will confer a very great boon on your memorialists and the district generally. And in duty bound your memorialists will ever pray, Sr.a." As a " postcript " to the memorial, the following was added : " Your memorialists would wish to draw your attention to the fact that there are fourteen tunnels in the north end of Giles and Rochfort Terraces, in which there has been about one hundred men employed for the last fortytwo weeks, and that the labor ai:d expenses of wHicH would be as follows : —IOO men forty-two weeks at £-1 per man per week, £10,800; 14 tunnels (expenses £BO per tunnel), £1120; total, £17,920.
