The Tararua arrived at the Bluff on the sth hist., after four days sixteen hours passage. Melbourne, May 31. There is good news from the Gilbert diggings, and steamers have been laid on. The Hon. Mr Francis declines the Commissionership of Customs. Breadstuffs dull; flour, nominally £l3. Oats are brisk at -Is. Sydney, May 30. The Spauish Consul, Don San Just, committed suicide ou Friday. He jumped through his bedroom window on to the pavement, aud fell on his back, and was killed instantly. The cause of the act is not known. A sack was found in Brougham-place, between Castlereagh and Pitt streets, on the 2Sth ult., containing the body of a woman dead, her face battered in. She has been recognised as a prostitute named Moor. A man named Mason, a sailor, has been arrested on suspicion. A man named Archibald has been committed for trial, for Halligan the gold buyer's murder, at Rockhampton. his accomplice, has not been arrested. Breadstuffs slow.
Adelaide, May 30. Superintendent Howell is charged with bayonetting a prisoner, named Johnston, and an investigation is going on. The Pavey's Mills, Mellang, were totally destroyed by fire, on Saturday. Markets quiet. Napier, June 1. A native letter from Mohaka savs that Te Kooti's body has been washed ashore in a biscuit case with a rope and anchor attached. Colonel Whitmore has returned to Napier from Wairoa. The Sturfc has gone to "Waiapu for 100 Ngatiporous. Colonel Herrick is engaged i n building a punt, and expects to be able to attempt to cross the Lake in about ten days. Colonel "Whitmore is goiug to Wellington. He seems thoroughly disheartened. The Crovernor and Dr Pollen have gone to the Thames. Another earthquake shock occurred here at 11 o'clock last night.
