THE MOKIHINUI RUSH.

Several persons who have paid a visit to the ground at Mokibinui where a prospecting claim was this week granted, have returned to town, aad have brought favorable accounts of the claim and the locality generally, as well as some pretty specimens of' the gold obtained. They all speak well of the richness of the first claim opened, and are hopeful of some of the adjoining claims proving good, but agree as to one particular—that there is nor, on the terrace at present opened, room for more than a hundred or a hundred and fifty people, and there is nearly that number on the ground. Six claims have been taken up "near the prospectors, and shafts are being sunk from the top of tho terrace, a distance of lift}'- feet. Numerous prospects have been taken by different parties from the tunnel of tho prospectors, and they are described as in every case " excellent," ranging from two to four pennyweights to the dish. The Warden, Dr Giles, visited the ground yesterday, and had a prospect washed, which gave 2dwts. lSgrs. of rough gold to the dish. The wash-dirt is fully better than described. As now exposed, it is six inches in thickness. The ground is dry, and requires no timber. In the prospectors' claim the lead has apparently been traced, and appears to run straight along the terrace, and those who arc now sinking are likely to strike it. It is probable also that the lead struck is not the only one, and, although there is not room for a large population on this particular terrace, there are numerous terraces in the neighbourhood which have never been prospected. Unless the terraces nearer to Mohikinui be worked, it is not likely that that township will be used a3 the depot for the locality now opened.
