The ketch Constant, on leaving Wcstport on Friday night for Charleston, got aground on the south spit. She was got off on the next tide, but her cargo had first to be discharged and brought ashore in boats. Before this was effected she got bilged, and some portions of her cargo—sugar and salt—were damaged. Sho is now in tho lagoon receiving repairs.

The barques Collingwood and Susan Jane were driven ashore at Timaru on Tuesdaylast. All hands were saved by means of the rocket apparatus. A man named Mills was severely burned by the rockets. The cause of the wrecks is the vessels having attempted to put to sea when there was scarcely any wind, and a heavy sea running inshore. The lifeboat put off in answer to signals of distress from the vessels after several ineffectual attempts to leavo the beach. At length she was got off with a crew of six men; when near the reef, the heavy breakers upset the boat; the men were all thrown into tho water, aud one was drowned. The long-looked for and anxiously expected ship Dngmar, Captain Brunstrom, has arrived at Lyttelton from London, after a protracted passage of 135 days from the Downs. Mr Cawood, of Lyttelton, has discovered a method of making compasses free from magnetic influences. While an ordinary compass would be so strongly affected by a magnet near it as to render it useless, Mr Cawood's would not be affected in the slightest degree, although the magnet touched the box. A rather unnecessarily severe test was made last week by placing the most powerful magnet obtainable to the compass, which did not affect it at all. Several ship-captains were present, and expressed themselves satisfled with the results.
