NELSON PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
REPRESENTATION OP GOLDFIELDS IN THE EXECUTIVE. We are as yet without full reports of the proceedings in the Council on Tuesday, "Wednesday, and Thursday last, the steamer Bruce not having arrived as expected. We have, however, from our correspondent a few memoranda indicating the results of several of the motions affecting the West Coast. A motion for the appointment of a member of the Executive who should represent the interests of the West Coast was carried. Mr Hennelly prcposed the resolution, to this effect:—" That, in the opinion of this Council, it is desirable his Honor the Superintendent should appoint a member of the Provincial Executive for the West Coast, who shall reside in that portion of the province, in order that the inhabitants of the South-west Goldfields may have a sufficient guarantee that moneys voted by this Council for public works and other departments of the South-west Goldfields will be equitably expended." Mr M'Dowell seconded the motion, which ; after much discussion, was amended as follows : —" That in the opinion of this Council, it is desirable his Honor should appoint a member of the Provincial Executive for the West Coast."
In the words of our correspondent, " All the members spoke in support oi the motion, except Mr Donne, who opposed it."
Mr Donne, on the same evening, moved, " That this Couucil consider it undesirable that the reporters of the Press should occupy any of the space allotted to members of the Council, particularly that portion of the Chamber between the Speaker's chair and the place of members, and therefore resolves that the Speaker be requested to provide other accommodation for the representatives of the Press outside the bar." Mr Parker moved as an amendment to strike out the words " outside the bar."
The motion, as then amended, was, after some discussion, adopted. Our correspondent, referring to this motion, says : —" Donne carried his point so far about the reporters, and they took up their pens and paper, and walked. They have, in consequence, given nothing but the notices of motion and the results in this morning's Examiner." We learn that the correspondence between the Cobden Committee and the Government, as well as a copy of the instructions, if any, given to Mr Lightband, were to be asked for. The session was expected to close on Thursday evening or Friday forenoon. The usual dinner was to take place on Thursday. The Superintendent had called a meeting of the electors last evening, and he is expected to sail for Wellington, with the other Nelson members of the General Assembly, by the Airedale on Sunday.
