The Westport Times. SATURDAY, MAY 22, 1869.
[t will be seen by our telegraphic news from Nelson that a small subsidy has been granted by the Provincial Council to a steamer suitable for the towing trade of AVestport and Charleston. The principle of subsidising steamers in difficult waters or exceptional trades is a principle weil-.vecog-nised in the Colony. The Otago Ixovern merit have for a series of years paid upwards of £2OOO a year as a subsidy to a harbor steam-tug, and they have subsidised also two steamers in connection with the trade of the river Moiyueux. The Canterbury Government have done the same with steamers trailing to Akaroa and Timaru, in addition to affording facilities for the landing of goods. In this case the principle is recognised, and nothing more. The subsidy is unquestionably, perhaps ridiculously, small. Still, £SO a month towards working expenses may be of some consideration to steamboat owners, or to those who may be disposed to invest in a new local steamboat company, and it is an outlay which would be of general public advantage.
