Tho change of weather which has occurred since Saturday has enabled the shipping business of the coast to be resumed. Yesterday morning wc had as many as five arrivals of steamers —three from Nelson, and two from W.inganui. They hud all been detained for some time in either port, by the late prevalence of severe weather, and the Charles Edward, after lying some time in Totaranui, had to put back to Nelson, leaving for the second time on Sunday morning. The fact of her return to Nelson not having been telegraphed, it was not known whether or where she had taken shelter until Sunday morning, when, in reply to questions, the fact was ascertained.
The steamer Brace for the second time put to sea on Saturday evening bound to Hokitika, but in a very short time she again made hor apj e irance fxuide the bar. On this occabi >n it was not the weather which was at fault, but some part of her boiler, which allowed too free an escape of steam. For the slight repairs necessary she returned to port as soon as the defect was discovered, and the passengers, who had made themselves snug in their berths, again visited their familiar haunts in Westport, without apparently deriving any great satisfaction from the circumstance. On Sunday morning the Bruce was able to proceed to sea, and she sailed for Hokitika direct. The s.s. Beautiful Star left Nelson on Thursday, the 20th ult., and arrived at Wangftnui next day. She was ready for sea on Monday, but was detained by bad weather until eight o'clock on Saturday morning, when she sailed f«r Westport. Crossing the Straits she had a head wind and a high sea. Anchored under Cape Farewell at eight on Sunday morning, to feed and water her live stock, and at midnight anchored off the Buller 1 ar. Off the Cape she passed the s.s. Alhambra, entering the Straits.
The Hokitika Dorough Couucil is about to remove the wrecks in the river by the use of gunpowder fired by electricity. A heavy nor'east gale has been felt at Napier, but the barque William Cargill rode it out safely, anil has since sailed for London.
The barque Dragon has been wrecked off j Richmond river. She was insured. The barque Lorenzo Sabine has also foundered in j Trial Hay. Mr Chapman, of the Great Britain, has been acquitted of all blame respecting the death of Mr Lawson, who jumped overboard on the passage out. Captain Gray has recovered from his illness. Messrs N. Edwards and Co. are now the agents at Nelson for the N.Z S.N. Company. The barque Bengal has been sold by auction at Duuedin, and was bought by Messrs Hutchinson and Co., for £IOOO. She was insured for €3500. At Wellington, on April 24, the steward of the s.s. Ilangifoto was fined ,£5 10s f or having in his possession ten boxes of cigars on which duty had not been paid.
