April 30 —Charles Edward, p.s., for Nelson. The Harbor-Master intends in a few days to attempt the experiment of removing the large snag which has for 3ome time become a fixture in dangerous proximity to the entrance channel of the river. He purposes placing beneath it, in one receptacle, four kegfuls of blasting powder, and to displace or break up the snag by blasting. The attempt will be made at low water during next spring tides, and it ia to be hoped it may bo successful. The brigautine Mary may now be hourly expected to arrive at this port from Melbourne. Indeed a vessel resembling her was seen in the offing on Thursday, but she has not yet brought up in the roadstead. She is advised as having sailed on the 20th inst. At that date the Storm King was also loading at Melbourne for this port, but it is not definitely known whether she has yet sailed. Tenders are invited by the General Government, prior to Juno 1, for 12 monthly mail services by the following routes :—Melbourne and Wellington via Hokitika ; Melbourne and Port Chalmers via Bluff; Melbourne and Auckland; Melbourne and Manukau; Sydney and Auckland; Sydney and Munukau.
