The steamer Bruce arrived in port on Tue ß ' day evening, from Hokitika direct, and at tide-time yesterday she sailed for Nelson. The schooner Mavis has been sold at Hokitika to Mr Cook for ,£2lO. During the passage of the Great Britain, a passenger named Lawson, an old resident of Bacchus Marsh, jumped overboard and was drowned. He floated for some time, but no boat was lowered, and an inquiry is being made in Melbourne as to the conduct of the third officer, who was in charge of the deck at the time.
