NELSON RACES.
The known presence ot the Duke, tho fine weather, and the numerous entries attracted a larger crowd to witness the races this season than on any previous occasion of the kind in the Province. The Maiden plate of GO sovs, was won by Mr. Stafford's ch. f. Lacenfeed, 3 years, and Mr. Redwood's ch. f. Misfortune was second. The two went off at tiptop speed, Misfortune taking the lead, which she miantained until'they had arrived at the dip, opposite the stand, when Lacenfeed went up and after a severe trial of speed took the lead and kept it home. The Duke ot Edixbttrgh Hasmcap Plate of 100 sots, added to a sweepstake of 5 sovs each. One mile and three quarters. Mr Stafford's ch g Magenta, 5 yrs 1 Mr Redwood's ch f Peeress, 3 yrs 2 , Mr Stafford's b f Lacenfeed, 3 yrs 3 | This was a severely contested race, and ', won by only half a length. The Waimea Plate of 15 sovs, ad- ; ded to a sweepstake of 1 sov, was won by Mr Blunnell's bk m Deception. Mr Stafford's ch m Occult being second. Tho Galatea Steeplechase, of 100 sovs, second horse to receive 10 sovs out of the stakes. Entrance, 8 sovs each. Over about three miles of fair hunting country. Three-year-olds, 9st i four-year-olds, lOst; five-year-olds, lOst 10lb ; six and aged, list. Mr Thomas' b g Rustic, aged 1 Mr Sellon's ch m Quicksilver, 5 yrs 2 Mr Richardson's br g Gamester, aged ... o Mr Redwood's b g Bones, 5 yrs 0 Mr Harford's b g Ranger, 4 yrs... ... ~, o
Gamester was from the first the favorite, and the race seemed to be between Gamester and Rustic, but at the last leap but two Gamester fell and left the race in Bustic's hands. Quicksilver, who took all her leaps gamely throughout, coming in second, Bones having gone to earth at the last leap. The Ladies Purse was won by Mr Bed wood's XXX, beating Nebula and Bobin Hood.
His Boyal Highness and suite were entertained on the course by the Stewards of the Turf Club, where an admirable dinner was provided. The second day's races were not so well attended. The Turf Club Plate of 100 sovs. fell to Mr Stafford's Magenta. The Handicap Steeplechase of 40 sovs, was won by Mr Selon's Quicksilver.
There was also a Hack Bace and a private match got up.
