THE GALATEA'S DEPARTURE FROM AVELLINGTON. AEEIVAL AT NELSON. MOEE DISASTROUS NEWS EEOM NAPIER. LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGBAPR.) (FEOII OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, Monday. The Duke of Edinburgh left in the Galatea early on Saturday for Nelson. ' He had gone on board privately on Friday night. The Artillery fired a salute as the Galatea left the harbor. It is arranged that she shall proceed from Nelson to Lyttelton. H.M.S. Challenger has sailed for Napier, from which unfavorable news of the movements of TeKooti continues to be received. Nelson, Monday. The Galatea arrived in Blind Bay yesterday morning at nine o'clock, and brought up a little beyond the usual anchorage. A late telegram to Christchurch states that the Maori King has expressed his approval of the proceedings of Te Kooti, at Mohaka, where the recent massacres took place, and also has given his adhesion to the Hau-hau movement generally. A pah at Taupo, held by fifty Eriendlies, has been attacked by Paora Taki with two hundred Hau-haus. Communication between Taupo and Napier has been stopped. Te Kooti's band is being followed by two hundred cavalry from Mohaka. The general aspect of affairs on the East Coast is very threatening.
The s.s. Omeo arrived at the Bluff on Thursdays and a few items of the intelligence she brought were telegraphed to the West Coast Times. Capt Calder, late chief-officer of the Omeo, has been promoted to the command of her.
The s.s. Great Britain, which was anxiously expected, arrived at Melbourne on the Bth inst. She was sixty-four days out, a splendid passage for ordinary vessels, but unusually long for her. All are well on board, excepting Captain Grey, her commander, who is suffering from an attack of jaundice. She brings few items of news. The most important are from Washington Ist February. The House of Eepresentatives, by 110 to G2 votes, had tabled a resolution in favor of annexation of the Republic of Hayti and San Domingo to the United States. Melbourne, April 8. The quarterly returns of revenue will be found very satisfactory. Mr Jones has not ventured yet to take his seat in the House.
Messrs Conway, Cosstick, and Wills were to play any three in Sydney, at single wicket, on the 17th inst. The Government have refused to deliver up the goods to Mr Lackerstein, seized in connection with the late Custom House cases, notwithstanding the verdict in his favor given by the Supreme Court, and he has commenced an action against the Customs Department for damages. The English papers per Great Britain state that the Melbourne Meat Preservation Company had issued invitations to a banquet to take place on the 6th February. The meat to be used was to be from the establishment at Eammorine, N.S.W. John Ferguson, late clerk in the office of Curator of Intestate Estates, is in custody, charged with forgery and embezzlement. Sydney, April 8. Heavy rains have fallen all over the colony, and the rivers are so swollen that fears are entertained of heavy floods. Vivers, the squatter, has been acquitted at Armidale on a charge of cattle stealing.
