MB STAFFOED TO PEESENT THE PETITION.

(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (fbom otto own cobbespondent.) Wellington, Friday. Mr Pitt, solicitor, "Westport, at present on. a visit to Wellington, has seen Mr Stafford with regard to the petition which is now being signed, praying for the separation of the Nelson Southwest Goldfields from the Province of Nelson. The interview was satisfactory. The Premier has promised to take charge of the petition. There have, up to this time, been received forty essays on the subject of the settlement of goldfields, and in competition for the prizes offered by the Government. No decision as to the prize essay has yet been arrived at.
