The briaantine Northern Light has discharged her cargo, and is now on the south side of the river receiving ballast. The steamer Yarra continues to make trips froni Hokitika to the Teremakau, under conimand of Captain Kerley, formerly of the Bruce. The steamer Waipara is now on her trip to Big Bay and intermediate places, under the new contract with the Westland Government.
It is said that the steamer Tairoa, lately trading between Dunedin and the Molyneux, is likely to be bought for the Fiji trade. Tiie stern-wheel steamer Tuapcka will probably be placed in the Port Chalmers trade. The Molyneux trade has not been remunerative.
The Japan, the first Victorian whaler has sailed from Melbourne for a two years' cruise on the " Middle ground," or northern shores of New Zealand. Messrs Osborn and Cushing are the owners. We understand that Captain Mackie, of the s.s. Omeo, is at present on his last trip in that vessel, that gentleman having been appointed to the command of the Rangitoto, and Captain Hagley, now of the Rangitoto, to his old favorite, the Tararua, Captain Ferguson, commander of the latter, having received the appointment of Chairman of the Adelaide Marine Board. Mr Calder, who has faithfully filled the position of chief officer in the Omeo for some years, is understood to have been appointed to the command of her on arrival at Melbourne. — West Coast Times.
