CHARLESTON.

(FBOM OUR OWN COEEESPONTJES'T.) March 31.

On Easter Monday the Charleston Cricket Club played a scratch match, the elevens being respectively cap. tained by Messrs Moore and Simpson, the former gentleman's team winning by 51 runs, and gaining an easy victory, as will be seen by the score, The ground was in very good ordei; and the weather all that could be desired. Mr Moore won the toss, and resolved on sending Simpson's team in. M'Kenny and Proffitt faced the bowling of Moore and Irwin, the former being nicely bowled by Moore in tke first over, when Proffitt was joined by Spiers. Proffitt was bowled by Moore in the second over, and the other had to succumb to the good fielding of Bennett. It i 3 hardly worth while to describe the rest of this innings. One notable feature was that Simpson did not appear in his usual good style, although, had he taken the bat earlier in the innings, I am of opinion that the score would have been materially altered. M'Kenny also seemed to be off what is colonially termed his " chump." Moore's eleven, in the first innings, seemed not to understand each other, all being out for 13, but in the second settled down to their wort in proper style, running the score up to 83. Simpson's team, in the second innings, were almost as bad as in the first.. The bowling of Moore, Profit, 1 and Irwin was very good, especially that of the first, who seemed to be " dead on " all the time. The stumps were drawn at half-past five o'clock, when players and spectators returned to town well. pleased with the afternoon's amusement. I hope before the cricket season closes a few more matches will take place. There is some talk of inviting our Westport friends down to a quiet • little game. It is very possible they will assent, for the Charleston boys are of the opinion that they will take beating. I will finish remarks and at once come to the vital portion of the game, viz., the score: —

In the evening balls were held at the European Hotel and Belle de Union, and were fairly patronised. Last evening a soiree was held in the Methodist Free Church, and was a great success, the building being densely crowded. Several gentlemen addressed the assembly, generally in a humorous manner. Captain Beveridge gave a recitation, " Man was made to mourn," and the choir rendered " How beautiful upon themontains " in a very creditable manner. The assembly was brought to a close, after spending a pleasant evening, by the Bev. J. White calling on all present to join in the doxology. The only. arrival this week is the ketch Standard, from Westport, which arrived in harbor yesterday"
