CRICKET MATCH.

A match between townspeople and miners was appointed to take place yesterday, but in consequence of the notice to the latter having been only given on Saturday, it was hardly expected many of them would put in an appearance, which expectation was fully justified by after events. At about mid-day sides were chosen by Messrs Haskins and Campbell. The former's side soon appeared at the wickets, which began to fall somewhat rapidly until Balmer and the " skipper " got together, when they "totted up" a considerable number, the partnership being eventually dissolved by Haskins's wicket being lowered by Dunn. Balmer lingered some time after the fall of his comrade, and at length retired by a ball from Dunn, having put together 32. The remainder of the wickets suon fell, none of the men making any stand except Thomas, who carried his bat out with a well-got 15. The innings closed with 97 runs, and after a few minutes for refreshment Haskins's side took the field and the wickets began to fall fast. In fact the innings, which only lasted about half an hour, closed for 24 runs. Haskins's side having thus scored more than double as many as their opponents, it was resolved to send them in again, when they made 39 runs, and were thus easily defeated. Messrs Munro and Fagg officiated as Umpires during the day, and their decisions gave thorough satisfaction. Throughout the day a large number of persons were present on the ground and appeared to take a lively interest in the match. The only casualty which occurred was an ugly " crack " received on the cheekbone by Balmer, who "caught" a ball on that part of his face with a force sufficient to render necessary his retirement from the match for a few minutes, and to somewhat disfigure the color and the contour of his physiognomy. Subjoined is the score :
