The Lancet gives the following opinion on the use of tobacco : —"We feel sure that the too prevalent habit of excessive smoking debilitates a large number of men by producing an •enfeeblement of the nervous system. We are certain that it is improper to subject the organism to the action of tobacco at all during its period of development, and especially before and during the establishment of puberty. And -we cannot ignore the fact that, •over and above its graver and physical effects, excessive smoking tends to withdrawmen from the field of steady and serious action into that of self-enwrap-ped meditation, and it too often militates against the performance of those unselfish duties of social intercourse which makes up the happiness of heme life. Upon this ground, as well as on that of the physical injuries produced by excess, the enemies of tobacco have an unquestionably strong case. They were ppen-mouthed at the choristers entering in their surplices, chanting as they went along—the organ playing, the candles burning, and all like a fairy scene. The lady in whose pew they sat came in, and, wishing them to make room for her, touched the nearest on the shoulder, and made him a sign to move along, when he said, quite audibly, 'Hoch! woman, *ak up Duncan, for he's a far better •a&ocer norma'
