TO EOBEBT C. EEID, ESQ., J.P. DEAE SlE,—Finding that at present Mr Luckie is the only candidate for the vacant seat in the Provincial Council, and heing fully impressed with the necessity of returning one whose opinions in all respects accord with our own, we request that you will allow yourself to be nominated. It is true that the vital question of Separation will not he advanced or retarded in the Provincial Council. It is true that Mr Luckie has promised, if elected, to endeavour to render Separation unnecessary. And it is true that he has ability and energy to carry out his promise. But we are pledged to Separation; and to elect any man, however able, whose interests are so intimately bound up with the advancement of Nelaon, and who at the same time proclaims himself an anti-separa-tionist, would be little short of selfstultification. We, therefore, trust that you will accede to our request, and we pledge ourselves to exert all bur influence to ensure your return. Tours faithfully, Eobertson & Co. "William Pitt Jno. To Messrs PITT, EOBEETSON, and the other Requisitionists. \JT to accede to your esteemed requisition. From my lengthened friendship with Mr Luckie extending over fifteen years I should be sorry to contest the election with that gentleman; but, having reason to believe, more especially since the result of the Separation meeting on Tuesday evening, that the feeling of the electors here is strongly opposed to the return of a resident of Nelson, however competent he may be to fill the office, I have considered that Mr Luckie's return would, without an active canvass, be almost hopeless. This seems also to be the opinion of Mr Luckie, from whom there has been received to-day an intimation of his retirement. My views are well known to you. Westport's interests are mine, as upon its advancement depends my own success. A.S I shall be afforded an opportunity of meeting you on Saturday next, the day of nomination, I need now merely promise, thatj if elected, I shall do my utmost for the interests of this district, and of the South-west Goldfielda generally. I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, , ' & C. REID. Westport, March 15,1869.
