A SUBSTITUTE FOR SEPARATION.

(To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sie, —If the statement made by one of the speakers on the night of the Seperation Meeting be correct, viz.: that the population of Nelson independently of the goldfielda was, in 1867, 13,203, that must certainly have included women and children, or, in other words, would give between 2000 or 3000 electors. Our population at the same period is put down at 10,611, and out of that there would be at least 8000 voters. Now, Sir, I would suggest that instead of dismembering the Province, we should select from among ourselves the best man we can find to represent us in the Council, and asthepresent Superintendent's term of office expires in October next, we should be able, provided our member retained the confidence of the electors, to put him into the office of Superintendent by an overwhelming majority. This ought to be an inducement sufficient to satisfy anyone who otherwise might not be in a position to offer himself as a candidate for the representation only This, I think, would prove a remedy for the great " grievance " mentioned at the meeting, and tben by holding the sessions of Council alternately in Westport and Nelson (as I hear they are about to do in Auckland and Shortlaud,) I do not think we should findany occasion for Separation or that, our interests could be neglected.—l am Sir, yours &c, Majoeitt. "Westport, March 16.
