TO WILLIAM PITT, ESQ., WESTPORT. KJ services of a gentleman of education and ability, and possessed of that most necessary qualification, local knowledge, to fill the present vacancy in the Nelson Provincial Council, caused by the resignation of Mr Bentley, we, the undersigned electors for the Electoral District of the Buller, have respectfully to request that you will allow yourself to be put in nomination at the forthcoming election on the 20th inst. Knowing that your opinions and wishes for the prosperity and advancement of the goldfields, and your knowledge of the present injustice those districts are and have been laboring under, harmonise with those of the general public, we promise, in the event of your complying with this requisition, to use our best interests and endeavors to secure your return. We are, Sir, Tour obedient servants, (Signed by 60 Electors.) Westport, March 10, 1869.
To E. C. SEED, Esq., J.P., and the other Gentlemen signing the requisition. ENTLEMEN", The requisition \JT I have received from so large a number of the influential members of this community is a compliment which I very much appreciate, and at this particular juncture of our affairs it would, perhaps, justify me in disregarding my own personal convenience and my general reluctance to take any prominent part in political affairs, were it possible to assent to your request. I find, however, that " The Disqualification Act, 1858," provides that no person holding any office of emolument or place of profit in any department of the General Government, as specified in the Act, shall be capable of being elected to any Provincial Council. As Crown Prosecutor of this District, I come within the above category, and I could not, therefore, accept the honor you would seek to confer upon me. Tours very faithfully, WILLIAM PITT. Molesworth street, Westport, March 11,1869.
