On Friday morning, the cutter Harry Bluff was leaving Mokikinui, with a cargo consisting of seventeen tons of coal for Westport. 'When on the bar, the wind failed her, and she was driven on to the North Spit. Some of the coal had to be thrown overboard, and the remainder will require to be discharged before she can be launched, but it is doubtful if, under any circumstances, the launching of her would reward the necessary trouble and expense. The steamer Beautiful Star is now on her way round from Dnnedin to Westport. The s.s. Kaikoura, -which is to sail about the middle of this month, is to proceed home by way of the Cape of Good Hope, under canvas. The captain of a Dutch barque which has arrive! at the Cape reports having seen a large full-rigged ship founder at sea, with all bauds. The schooner Fairy, which sustained damages while lying at Charleston, has been got off the rock, and will be repaired and despatched to sea. H.M.S. Blanche is to leave Wellington on the 10th for the Auckland Islands. The schooner Heron, bound to Melbourne, put into this port on Thursday last, for repairs. She cleared at the Customs, Westport, for Melbourne, in ballast, having a few passengers, and, on the evening of the 2nd inst. the steam-tug Lioness took her in tow, but on crossing tho Buller bar she struck very heavily, and was dragged off and on for about half-an-liour, a heavy sea running at the time. A survey was ordered to be held yesterday afternoon. — Kelson Examiner, March 6. The p.s. Sturt arrived at Wellington on March 2, from Patea and Wanganui. She reports the total loss of the Woodpecker on Patea bar, about 7 a.m. on Sunday List. That vessel, which was lying in Patea river, dragged her anchor and drifted on to the south spit. The captain hoisted signals of distress, and Captain Fairchild and Mr Lodder, chief engineer of the Sturt, went at once in their boat and took off the crew. The engineers of the Sturt afterwards saved all the machinery, but the steamer became a total wreck. It appears singular that while Captain Fairchild deemed it necessary to have two anchors down, and also lines made fast on shore, the Woodpecker should have been riding at a single anchor. — Evening Post.
