THE SPRING CREEK RUSH.
The following extract from a private Ri letter received by a gentleman resident 1| in Talbot speaks anything but favour- I ably of the prospects of Spring Creek. K The writer says :—" This is a most in- S fernal hole. The reports in the R~: papers are entirely false. There ia K but one lead, and the yields so talked £| about have been obtained from stuff I carefully picked. The washdirt here, 9--it is true, is 2ft. and 3ft. thick, but 9 only averages from ldwt. to at most 9 7dwt. for those who are 'on it.' 9 Many hundreds here do not know I what to turn their hands to, there I being no shallow ground. The sink- fc ing is 30ft. to 40., and in wet ground I 80ft. Cartage is cheap— Is. a mile, Mrthrough roads (I speak in bounds) 9 upon which the dust comes up to the 9 horses' knees." Alluding to the 9 scarcity of water and the ill effects 9 thereof, the writer states that hisS party has to cart the water they use 9 seven miles, th 6 price per bucket as i«S io Bold being 3d. Provisions on Af»M whole are cheap, and pick pointing isff done for Id ; the price for everything I shoiong'the little business doing, and 9 consequent small returns of gold. The I writer concludes a melancholy pictured of the rush by stating the intention of fl himself and party of " going back to 9 the old spot "as soon as possible. pfe
