The brigantine Mary, which anchored in the roadstead early on Sunday, was towed iuto port on Tuoiday morning by the steamer
Lioness, which came up from Ilokitika for the purpose. The Mary is now under command of Captain M'Phaiden, forrner y of tho barque Nightingale. She left Melbourne on Saturday" tho 20th, and was off Westport on Saturday last making a very rapid run from Port Phillip Heads. She is now discharging alongside the Bright street wharf. The Charles Edward, from Nelson, arrived on Tuesday some hours before the Murray, although she left an hour and a half later. During the latter part of the passage, the Murray had to contend with a strong aoutheily breeze. Both sailed for southern ports at mid-night on Tuesday. Several small craft put into the Buller for shelter on Tuesday. Among the number were the cutter Volunteer from Manukau, and the Brothers and Sisters, from or for Charleston; Tho Volunteer made the run down from the Manukau in three days, but was detained in the vicinity of Charleston for live days, and ultimately made for the Buller. She brings, for Charleston, a cargo of potatoes and turnips consigned to Messrs D. Girdwood and Co. The brigantine Northern Light was loading at Melbourne for Westport when the Marysailed. Messrs Spence Brothers have purchased the s.s. Otago for £12,500. The steamer Taranaki, as she now lies in Bowden's Bay, has been sold for £245. The ship Ida Ziegler went ashore at Napier on Saturday, during a black north-caster, accompar. ; ed by heavy rain. Assistance was rendered from the shore, but the ship was reported to be fast breaking up. An inquiry into the loss of the St. Vincent has been held at Wellington. The decision was, that the ship was lost through the captain's error of judgment in not running into Cloudy Bay or back to Wellington. The mate offered to pilot the ship into Cloudy Bay, but the captain would not agree to it. The wreck has been sold for £l. A eode of signals and some six coils of rope were all the valuables recovered from the wreck. One of the seamen, name not known, was until recently part owner of the cutter Dawn, and only sold out to Captain Henderson a day or two previous to the catastrophe. De Costa, one of the seamen, shipped at Wellington, had a brother at Hokitika, of the firm of Isaacs and De Costa, auctioneers. It is said that, next season, the s.s. Alhambra is to make a pleasure excursion round New Zealand, visiting the Sounds on the West Coast and other places. A more attractive excursion could scarcely be made in any part of the world.
