THE BULLER RIVER WORKS AND TRACK.

The following letter has been addressed by Mr Greenfield, Provincial Secretary, to the Chairman of the Progress Committee. It will be seen that the Chairman's predictions as to report succeeding report, and as to these reports ending in nothing practical being undertaken with regard to the Westport river works, have been fully sustained. The other resolution of the Government, to proceed with the repairs of the Buller track, has already been noticed. The letter reveals what we anticipated, that the work is only to extend as far as the Lyell. The letter is dated the 11th instant:— Sie, —Referring to my letter of the 29th December last relative to the protection of the north bank of the Buller river, I have now the honor to inform you that the Government have considered Mr Balfour's report (copy of which I enclose) together with the report of the Provincial Engineer (which has already been forwarded to you,) and as the works recommended in those reports involve an outlay of a very large sum of money, the Government cannot, taking into consideration the present state of the revenue, authorize their being done during this financial year, especially without the sanction of the Provincial Council. Full particulars shall, however, be laid before the Council next session, and the question will be re-considered by the Executive when framing the estimates for the next financial year. With respect to the Buller Valley road from Weatport to tho Lyell, the Government, having obtained a report on this line of road, with an estimate of the probable cost of making the same, hive now decided to proceed with the work at once, and the District Engineer will, therefore, be instructed to prepare the necessary specifications and advertise for tenders without delay.
