The steamer Bruce arrived off the port on Tuesday from Hokitika, and found two towages in the roadstead, the schooner Heron, from Melbourne, and the May Tan Every, from Ota.-*o, having anchored there. She towed both vessels in, and on the s imo afternoon sailed for Auckland, where h*r owners sewn to think that a profitable trade awaits her, although it is not improbable that she would find quite as profitable employment on the West Coast. The steamer Waipara arrived from Hokitika aud Greymouth on Tuesday evening. She called also at Fox's, but was not able to land any cargo. In future, we believe, she is likely to make the Teremakau a regular port, of call, and with this object we understand that a' sigual-staff and beacons will shortly be provided there. The advantages of the Teremakau as a port have chiefly been brought under notice by the necessity of expediting carriage to the recently-opened diggings at the Greenstone. The schooner Mary Van Every shipped her cargo of produce, at Moeraki, and made a passage of fourteen days, with variable weather. She is in charge of Captain Deuchars. The schooner Heron, Captain J. R. Brown, sailed from Melbourne on the 27th ultimo with fresh northerly winds and fine weather. During the voyage she experienced a continuation of light variable winds, attended by terrific thunder and lightning, and much rain. On the 15th instant, she came to an anchor off the Buller, and on the 16th was safely towed in by the steamer Bruce, and moored alongside Bright street Wharf. The s.s. Wallabi, which arrived yesterday forenoon, left Wanganui at one o'clock on Tuesday morning. She brings an extensive cargo of stock and produce. The steamer Yarra his made her first trip to the Teremakau. On crossing the bar, Captain White found no less than nine feet of water in the channel, with a straight run in. Steamed into the lagoon, sent a line ashore, canted the steamer, and ran out again easily. The Yarra is the first steamer that has crossed the Teremakau bar, and the second vessel, the schooner Emerald Isle having crossed it about five years ago. According to latest advices the well-known steamship Albion is still trading on the Japan coast, and has given great satisfaction to travellers by her. She was to be fitted with six ten-pounder guns, and was shortly to be sold to the Japanese. Captain Kidney was about to leave and proceed to England ; and a Captain Dunn, an American, was to take the command. Captain Benson, late General Manager of the P.N.Z. and A.R M. Company, has been appointed agent for the Royal Mail Company, and during his stay he will also act in the same capacity for Messrs Heuderson, Maefarlane, and Co.
