CHARLESTON.

(from our own correspondent.) Feb 17. The fine fall of rain on Saturday last has enabled the mining population to once more resume work, but I am sorry to have to state that what water has been secured will be only sufficient for a few days' washing. Business is still very dull, but will most likely show an improvement at the end of the week. Numerous applications for new ground, extended and other claims, races, &c, continue to be made, showing that in spite of the dry weather the mining population still have faith in the district. The public meeting called by the promoters of the Charleston Eureka Water Company was held in Hunter's Hotel on Saturday evening last, but was not so well attended as was expected, the rain probably keeping our mining friends from giving their attendance. The business of the meeting commenced by Mr M'Donald proposing that Mr Gillespie do take the chair. Mr Liddell seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The chairman thought that, owing to the state of the weather, the meeting should stand adjourned. He then read the notice convening the meeting. Mr M'Donald mentioned his having, with other members of the committee, waited upon the members forming the committee of the Prospecting Association, with a view of obtaining the money they have on hand, the money to be devoted to the obtaining a special survey of the proposed scheme. They highly approved of the scheme, and would call a meeting of subscribers to see if they would consent to hand over the money. He also mentioned that he had, along with the committee, waited upon Mr Broad, to see if Government would feel disposed to grant

extended areas for reservoirs, &c. Mr Broad said tbat if the schema was properly carried out, he had no hesitation in saying that Government would give the necessary grant. Mr M'Donald moved, and Mr Hunter seconded, that the meeting stand adjourned till "Wednesday evening next at eight o'clock ; carried nem. con. The meeting then separated, having given a vote of thanks to the chairman.
