CHARLESTON.
(from our owx correspondent.) Feb. 4. The long continuance of dry weather has been the cause of great staguatioa in business throughout this district, scarcely any claims being possessed of sufficient water to keep their work going. However, the miners have not been idle, having been actively employed in repairing dams, cutting timber, effecting necessary repairs, aud getting a good stock of wash-dirt and cement ready to hand, in anticipation of the first fall of rain. Judging from the numerous applications for races, &c, at the Warden's Court, the future of Charleston does not look at all gloomy, as the miners, by making these applications, seem to be well satisfied of the permanency of the district. But without a steady supply of water this district cannot be well worked, and as the fine weather has been of such long continuance, the return of rainy weather, which appears about to visit us, will be welcomed by all. Shipping business has been rather brisk during the past fortnight, several arrivals having taken place, with general cargoes, which realised very fair prices when disposed of by auction.
