None of the three steamers due from Wanpanui—the Wallabi, the Waipara, and the Beautiful Star —has yet arrived in port. - They are all hourly expected, as also may be J . the Bruce, which should have arrived at Nel- i son yesterday. The Beautiful Star is now, we believe, under the command of Captain | Hepburn, formerly of the Wm. Miskin and \v amui. Captain Leech, the Harbor Master, has lately been busy '< snagging" Ife has secured one bulky and awkward snag on the bar, and ■ hopes to'be able to remove it with the assist- ( since of the Charles Edward. It is now compulsory on steamers to have proper gangways to the shore when in port, ar.d, not to 'speak of the advantage in preventing accident*, the convenience is considerable. The schooners Waterman and Heron were to have left Melbourne for this port on or about the 24th ultimo. It is reported that the owners of the Waterman have reduced the rate of freight by ten shillings per ton between Melbourne and this port. M.ich interest is taken in the race between the schooners Crest of the Wave and Ban shee. They left Dunedin together on their last trip to the coast, arrived in the Grey | roadstead together, the latter passing on to j Hokitika. They are both on the same round trip—from the coast to Pclorua Sound, and thence io Dunedin. The Banshee was towed to ;ca yesterday at noon, and passed this oort while the Crest did not get to sea until last 'i got at 10.— Grey Mice,- Argiu,3xa. 30. Two melancholy occurrences took place during the passage of the ship Essex, which arrived at Melbourne on the 15th ulfc. from London. On the night of the 11th December a passenger of the name of S. Hunter was lost i>i a manner of which no account can be given. He. appears to have been suddenly missed, a::d the fttte of the unfortunate man is wrapped in mystery to which no clue can be found. Strange to say, on the night of the 8 h hist, an exactly similar case took place un board the same vessel. In this instance the name of the missing person was Samuel Hnlstock. Like the other, he left no traces, :icr is there any evidence from which to obtain a record of his end.
