VVhen Judge Tappan was on the bench in Buckeye State, and had just given some malefactors a very severe sentence, a rough backwoodsman, who had been practising at the other bar. exclaimed:—"That's right! give em thunder, old gimlet-eyes." " "Who is that?" screamed the irate and indignant Judge. " It's this old hoss," answered the pioneer, giving his breast an approving slap. "Mr Sheriff," retorted Tappan, " put that old hoss in the stable, and keep him a week os bread and water."
