ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
SwEEPSTiKES.—The only authority we can quote at present on the subject referred to by you, is the Australasian of the sth alt., which says: stakes, unless, as is sometimes done on the course, it is understood that it goes to the * horse Crstpast the post.'" The same journal answers another correspondent to the following effect: —*' The sweep follows the stakes, unless it was understood at the time the sweep was got up ' the horse first past the post' to save bother in case of protests or disqualifications." If your sweepstake was got up without any special understanding, the money is therefore not yours, but must go to the holder of the horse winning the stakes, but if the understanding was " first past the post," then neither protest nor disqualification affects your winning.
