THE NEW GOLDFIELD IN OTAGO.

The Sun publishes the following letter, which has been written to Mr Warden Pyke, by Mr William Green, of Tapanui, and a copy of which has been sent by Mr Pyke to the Government :

" I went prospecting for a payable goldfield where we could fetch a water-rare. 1 found the field, and took out the necessary li. cense. Our race is situated upon Mr Ainsley's run, on the Waikaka, near the Pomahaka. We have a license for 16 heads of water. The ground is upon the south boundary of Mr Ainsley's run, down to Mr M'lntyre's run and the whole of Mr M'Nab's run. " I believe there is at least five miles square of payable ground here upon those runs. " The whole of the ground is new, except some few gullies, which have been cradled. I was prospecting the terrace for six weeks, and every one that I tried contained payable gold, with water upon them. " We have some first-class ground. We have ground below our race which will not be worked out for twenty years, although 100 men were employed at it every week. We are about 20 miles from Switzers. " I believe this will be a good and long goldfield. The Mataura runs at the foot of M'Nab's run ; and I believe it can be lifted on to the terrace. " Some of the gold is fine, —some scaly—and some nice shotty gold. The depth of ground varies from 20ft to 40ft. A little fine gold all through the dirt, from the gras-roota."

A Western editor, in response to a übscriber, who grumbles that hw morning paper was intolerably damp, says, " that it is because there is so inueh due on it."
