NOTES FROM CHARLESTON.
Dec. 27. The last ten days havo been a busy period in Charleston. On the 24th especially the three banks were as busy as they could well be, there being probably more gold smelted on that day than there had been at any one time since the town was founded, and it is expected that the next escort will convey the largest quantity of gold that has yet been forwarded to Westport. On Christinas Eve, the town had a very gay appearance. The miners from the outskirts arrived in great numbers, and the outfitters have since had reason to congratulate themselves upon the amount of trade which they have done. Altogether there havo been very satisfactory signs of the prosperity and stability of Charleston. The arrangements for the Christmas sports have unfortunately not given unmitigated satisfaction. There have even been insinuations that the promoters have been throughout somewhat mercenary. First, it was decided to hold the sports near some of the hotels contributing most largely. Then it was decided to hold them in the swamp or cricket-ground, as they called it. The ground there is certainly moist enough, taking a person over the ankles occasionally, and as for ladies wearing kid boots to visit such a place, the idea is preposterous. Water-tights woidd be more suitable pedal coverings. The race-course beach or second bay would have been the preferable locality. The beaches are in splendid condition, and the tides -would have answered admirably. The ketch Constant seems to make quick trips to and from Westport. There is certainly nothing like working Charleston harbor when weather permits. The cutter Harry Bluff is at present caught inside, the sea being rough. She seems, however, to weather it well. The ketch Enterprise was in the offing, but she stood out to sea on Saturday.
