The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1868.
It now appears, as we suspected, that the table of imports published in a recent number of the General Government Gazette was grossly incorrect. In a later number a fresh table has been published for the purpose of "correcting someerrorsandomissions," and these "errors or omissions " are not few in number. "Westport, instead of having no imports, is shown to have imported goods during the September quarter to the value of £23,892, including £427 from the United Kingdom, £655 from New South "Wales, £22,625 from Victoria and £lB5 from the Mauritius. Greymouth, instead of importing to the value of £97,950, as originally stated, imported only to the value of £45,142, showing a reduction of about £I2OO, compared with the same quarter of the previous year. The imports of Hokitika seem to have been correctly valued at £61,557, which compares badly with £176,071 in the year 1867. Nelson, which was credited with £12,224, is now shown to have imported to the value of £76,068, and "Wanganui, which, like "Wesiport, was reported as having imported nothing, now appears to have imported to the value of £10,189. These alterations increase the grand total of the revenue of the Colony for the quarter from £1,204,563 to £1,249,670, being an increase of over £45,000. It is certainly not satisfactory that, in a matter of statistics, and especially of statistics published authoritatively, inaccuracies of so serious a character should have been permitted to occur.
