THE KAIKOURA'S PASSENGERS IN QUARANTINE.
PROBABLE CONTINUANCE OF THE PANAMA LINE. DEATH OP MRS. WILSON. (5J ELEOTBIG TELEGRAPH.) (from our own correspondent.) Wellington, Tuesday. The Panama Mail Steamer Kaikoura, which arrived yesterday, had two cases of small-pox on board. The passengers for New Zealand have all to go into quarantine for a fortnight. The mails were fumigated before they were landed.
It is reported that the Panama mail service is to be continued for twelve months longer. Mrs Wilson has died at Napier, to the regret of all, on Thursday 1 .st. At Wanganui a memorial is being signed, protesting against Whitmore's return, and asking that the defence of the distaict be committed to Dr Featherston, the same as it was to Mr M'Lean on the East Coast.
Finnimore's force, sixty strong, destroyed fully £3.000 of Hau-hau property, and two Hau-hau Maoris, and a large quantity of stock has been retaken and returned to owners.
The force reached as far as Manawapou, without the loss of a horse or man.
This is the greatest event since the commencement of the present hostilities, and a good moral effect has been produced on both sides, it being purely a settlers' raid on the enemy.
