"We understand that the amended writ for the election of a member for the "Westport district in the Nelson Provincial Council has been received, and will be issued immediately. There are polling places appointed at the Caledonian Terrace, and at Addison's Flat, as well as at Westport. The principal workings in the Addison's Flat district may now be said to be at the Shamrock Lead. The first and second townships on Addison's t Flat proper have lately greatly diminished in population. A number of men are engaged near " Dirty Mary's Flat," and are making from three to four pounds per week. A man named Bailie, a native of Switzerland, died in the Hospital on Friday evening. He had been engaged washing tailings in company with another man at the Caledonian Terrace, and, it is said, had been for some time confined to his hut by the illness of which he ultimately died. He survived only a short time after being brought to the Hospital. Very satisfactory news continues to be received from the diggings on the Lyell. There are said to have been some extraordinary finds made lately, but we do not care to refer to these more particularly until they are fully corroborated, as we expect they shall be in a few days. On Saturday evening the boat which usually plies between Westport and the township there, came down to town, and returned immediately with one of the largest cargoes that she has yet conveyed up river.

A consignment of books intended to form the nucleus of the Westport Athenseuun library has been received from Melbourne by the brigantine Sea Bird, and we may expect that that useful institution will be opened in a few days. We learn from Griles Terrace, that Bruce and party, whose claim is next to that of Perry and party, have completed their water-race, which is about half a mile long, and commenced washing last week. Other claim-hold-ers are progressing satisfactorily with their work. At the Caledonian, Fletcher and party have nearly completed their tramway, above a mile in length, and are now supplying timber to the surrounding claims. The work haß been a very creditable one, and it is hoped that it will prove remunerative.
