CALEDONIAN TERRACE.
(prom ottr own correspondent.) Mining matters here continue much as usual, with certainly no falling off in yield or population, but rather an improvement. On the Ballarat Terrace, one or two parties have been obliged to cease work for a time. G-oodall and party have ceased working in their old tunnel, and have commenced to put in a new one. Smith and party's claim continues to pay
fairly, and their shaft has not been injured by any falling in as yet, but, if the race should overflow again, their claim might be injured for a little time. The back-ground in this claim has settled down slightly, and the party is working in the front of the the tunnel, but as yet their ground is pretty secure; and, no doubt, this claim will pay well for some time to come. On the Caledonian Terrace, Marshall and party's claim continues to yield its owners regular and good returns, and Nuttall's, as well as the claims of Street and party, Winter and party, and Hunter and party, return considerably more than average wages. The Dane's claim has improved wonderfully of late, and Walker's claim is said to be improving also, and likely to return a handsome income to the shareholders for many months. Thyson's may be mentioned also, as a fair payable claim. The Frenchman's party have been constructing a large dam, but it broke away on them. Another new tunnel is being driven in to the Back Lead. At Giles Terrace, the bulk of the. population may be said to be doing exceedingly well. Indeed, there are few places on the Nelson goldfields more likely to be lasting or more payable than that locality. One or two new places are going up, among which is a large hotel in the course of erection, by Messrs Brennan and Byrne. On German Terrace, one or two of the earliest prospectors have , sold out.
A great many of the miners and others from these terraces, are likely to pay the town a visit during the Christmas week to seethe sports and races, and there will be a hit of money flying about most probably. By the way, I may mention that your best of charitable institutions, the Hospital, is in very bad odour here. There are many expressions of displeasure to be heard concerning it among storekeepers and miners, but how there can be any ground of complaint I am myself unable to understand. Perhaps others may be able to tell.
