The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 1868.
In a resume of the New Bankruptcy Act, recently given in these columns, it was stated that a remedy had beea provided for the excessively inconvenient arrangement by which insolvency, declarations were gazetted only in the Gazette of each province. This remedy, it was explained, was contained in a clause by which each Judge of the Supreme Court is empowered to appoint any gazette or newspaper in his judicial district as a gazette for the purposes of the Act. Still more recently our columns contained a report of a bankruptcy case—that of Godfrey —which prominently illustrated the amount of loss and litigation which might arise in such a district as this, from the continuance of the original arrangement. Advantage of the powers contained in the new Act has been readily taken by Mr Justice Richmond, and, by his appointment, this journal will in future be the gazette for the district. The letter of appointment, of which we have received a copy, is as follows :
"I have the honor to inform you that His Honor Mr Justice Richmond has been pleased to appoint the Westport Times newspaper, to be the gazette for the purposes of the Bankruptcy Act 1867, and the Bankruptcy Act Amendment Act 1868, from the Ist December next, for such part of the Judicial District of Nelson as lies to the southward and westward of a line drawn Btraight from
Rocks Point to the summit of Mount Arthur, and tbence due south to the southern boundary of the said district. " You will observe that the settlement of Brighton and others to the southward of the Five Fingers Rocks, being in the Westland Judicial District, are not included in the New Gazette District now appointed.
It has been found necessary to discontinue, for the present, the weekly reprint of this journal. The tale which it included will probably be resumed when a weekly journal will be published in an altered and improved form.
