THE GREY DISTRICT.
During the past week the intelligence received from the mining centres in this district has continued good. The Argus of Saturday says : —A very extensive rush from the Hokitika side has taken place to the old Greenstone diggings, where a fresh discovery was made about a fortnight ago. In the account we previously gave of this rush we cautioned miners that there were as many meu on the ground as there was work for, but they continued to flock in from the Waimea and other places, until, on Wednesday last, it was authoritatively stated that there were nearly 2000 men on the ground. This may be an over-estimate, but there is no doubt that a very extensive rush has taken place, more than the capabilities of the locality will warrant. From the Eight mile Terrace, New River, we learn that the diggings are rapidly extending, and much more ground is being taken up, and proved to be auriferous. The old claims are not turning out so rich as was at first anticipated, bub still they will average fair returns. From the Manuka Flat, in the same neighborhood, we have good reports, a large number of claims having struck very good gold. From Nelson Creek, we learn, in addition to the intelligence published elsewhere, that mining matters are in a very prosperous condition. Although the last discovery up the gully has been over-estimated, everyone appears satisfied with the prospects obtained. It is said that there are 2000 men in the gully, but we are reliably informed that a proper estimate would be nearer 1200. There are yet from four to five miles of terrace untouched, and there is no reason why it should not be auriferous,, as well as the portions which have been tried and proved to be very rich.
