The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1868.
Several holders of property in Wharf street and Kennedy street have subscribed towards the construction of temporar}' protective works on the river bank, and a small amount of assistance was promised by the Government. Tenders were called for, and three were received. The tenders were, per chain, £8 3s 6d ; £6 19s ; and £6 12s 6d. The lowest tender was that of Mr Sloan, and it was accepted, ou tlie understanding that a penalty of £3 per day would be imposed, if the works were not not completed by the contractor within three days. A letter, signed by W. Quinlan, complaining of the negligence of the Post Office authorities in omitting to forward the mail by the steamer Charles Edward, appeared in our issue of Saturday. Tre hare been recfuested to state that the
mail was ihado u,» and sent duwu to the steamer from the Post Office a quarter of an hour before the notified time of sailing. The blame, therefore, is attachable only to the captain of the steamer, who left the river some time before the hour stated to the Post OOice. The cause may be attributed to the difference in the time kept by the steamer's clock and that of the Post Office. There have been several complaints made in this instance, as the mail was a heavy one for all the northern ports, and we understand the point will be brought under the law in accordance with the Post Office .Regulations Act, on the return trip of the Charles Edward.
