WESTPOET. mail wATEit. This Day ... 4.26 a.m., 4.51 p.m. ATCIUVALS. Kennedy, s.s., Whitwell, from Greymouth. N. Edwards and Co., agents. The steamer Kennedy returned to port yesterday rather unexpectedly, bringing back with h r the passengers who had sailed by her for Hokitika. Tho reason of this was the fact of her being unable to cross the Hokitika bar. She left Westport at two o'clock on Thursday morning, and got into Greymouth at eleven on the forenoon of the same day. There she was detained until mid-day on Saturday, Thursday having been so wet that it was impossible to discharge cargo. On arriving olf Hokitika,no signal was made that tho bar was fit to take, and she anchored in the roadstead, but towards Sunday morning it came on to blow a perfect gale, and as the vessel commenced to drift inshore, the anchor was lifted, and she ran for Westport before a very heavy and increasing sea. The John Penn had got into Hokitika, but was there barbound. 'The steamer Egmont was in the roadstead. The tug-steamer Yarra had been driven ashore, and was seen lying high and dry.
