The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1868.

A Gift Auction is advertised to take place this evening, at Mr Munro's salerooms, Molesworth street. The " stock " to be disposed of is of a miscellaneous character —useful, we are told, and also ornamental. The object of the sale is to liquidate the debt upon the Church of England harmonium, and for other church purposes.

The Hospital Committee held, last evening, a meeting which did not conclude until a late hour. A. sub-commit-tee submitted a series of rules and regulations for the guidance of patients and officers in the Hospital, and with regard to the admission of in-patients or the treatment of out-door patients. The sub-committee appointed to inquire into the case of Adams also reported, and read explanatory letters from Dr Thorpe and Mr Poole —letters which, witli the result of inquiries otherwise made, the Committee considered thoroughly satisfactory. The regulations adopted, and the letters read, are so lengthy that it is impossible for us to publish them to-da} r . Mr Harris, as Treasurer of the Westport Hospital, acknowledges the receipt of £1 Is from Mr Thomas Howe, and an additional 10s 6d from Miss Bella .Newton.

The following are the applications to be heard in the Warden's Court to-day : —James M'Gowan and party, special site for stacking tailings and washing purposes, Excelsior Terrace. Nicholas Cacacoe and party, the same, Giles Terrace. D. Baylis and party, washing site, Ballarat Creek. E. Povan and party, a head race, south of Deadman's Creek. J. M'Xinlay and party, a head race, Cock-a-Bulla Creek. Alex. Kilior, a head race and dam, Deadman's. W. Martin aud party, a head race, Upper Buller. D. Allen and party, a head race, Lyell. J. M'Kiulay, tunnel, ]N T orth East Terrace. A Charleston correspondent writes : There is really nothing here to make a remark about at present, the Court cases being unimportant, applications for water-races, &c, chiefly occupying the time of the Court. The onby arrival in the port since my last has been the ketch Constant. One observation I cannot help making. Whatever may be said about business being dull in this place, it would be a puzzle to find any person hanging about the town idle or looking for employment, and, as numbers of men are eugaged here on wages, there would, of course, be no excuse of which any such idler could avail himself.

Mr Ellery, of the Melbourne Observatory, estimates that the late earthquake wave must have crossed the Pacific at the rate of 353 miles an hour.

During his tour in this colony, the Rev. Father Hiekie is said to have collected £1450 for the establishment of a Catholic University in Ireland. In California he collected £2500, and in Victora £I7OO for the same object.

The Customs revenue for the September quarter is less than the corresponding quarter by £5016 for the whole colon}-.
